Botanical name: Melaleuca Leucadendron
Botanical family: Myrtaceae

Part of plant used: Leaves and young branches

Origin: Malaysia, Philippines and Australia.

Description: Pharmaceutical, therapeutical aroma with a slight ‘cats’ smell

History: ‘Kayu puteh’ means white wood in Malaysian – sometimes referred to as the White Tea Tree.

Properties and Indications:

  • Highly sudorific – promotes sweating
  • Powerful intestinal antiseptic and cleanser – useful for gastroenteritis, dysentery, illness’s caused by organisms living in water, eg. amoebas
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Swampy type illness’s such as malaria
  • Urinary infections such as cystitis
  • Cold and damp illnesses
  • Especially good for the onset of colds or flu
  • Lung congestion – has an expectorant quality
  • Rheumatism
  • Can be used for dermatitis if other oils don’t seem effective

Contra-indications:

  • If inhaled too much or taken internally can be emetic (cause vomiting)
