Botanical name: Styrax Benzoin
Botanical family: Styraceae

Part of plant used: Resin
Origin: Found in Sumatra and Java. Rain forest trees (styrax), don't need to be cut down as an incision is made in which the tree heals itself. The Styrax tree is related to the coniferous family but has no cones.
Description: Vanilla like aroma.
History: Originates from the northern part of the Middle East - Iran, Iraq, Persia. Is a popular ingredient in Friars Balsam.
Properties and Indications:
- Excellent for asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia - use an inhalation and chest rub
- Shingles - apply neat with a sterile spatula to the affected area - calms pain immediately and is good for scar tissue
- Dermatitis
- Works well for chapped hands
- Rheumatism, arthritis
- Helps expel toxins of mucous discharge, ie. lungs, shingles, thrush
- Grounding but not a sedative
- Suitable for children
Personality:
- Attracted to self contained people, introvert but not shy, may be talkative but not about themselves
- Nervous, agitated people
- For people who keep a pleasant face in public
- People who have depressions and hide away on their own
Blending:
- Bergamot, Clove, Cypress, Frankincense, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Myrrh, Orange, Petitgrain, Rose, Sandalwood, Vetivert
Blending ideas:
- Herpes - mix with Bergamot and Sandalwood
- Nervous system - mix with Lavender
- Sunburn - mix into Calendula cream
